Tax Avoidance

I have had several students come to me trying to find information on the issues concerning tax avoidance cases in the past three year.  So when I came across these articles from the Guardian I thought of you all and hope they might be of interest to you.

Prem Sikka is a professor at the University of Essex and regularly writes for the Guardian.  There are several posts by Professor Sikka on the topic of tax avoidance for you to look at.

A Love(ly) Business

Its not exactly a specific Accounting post but given tomorrow is valentine's day this story caught my eye on the BBC and just goes to show there is a market out there for almost any business.

We want to know how you research.

I'd like to ask for 5 minutes of your time to fill out a quick survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YJ9G2QR

There are people out there who would like to know how you access and use our electronic material (journals, e-books etc):

"Jisc [a UK charity who champion the use of technology in higher education] is carrying out a study into the way that students and research staff in UK Higher Education access online academic resources such as journal papers, articles and e-books. This study includes a short online survey aimed at both students and academic/research staff.

The survey is straightforward and shouldn't take longer than 5 minutes to complete.  You can find more detailed information about the project on the project blog.

The URL for the survey is

Please find a little time to take part, you never know your participation might bring about positive changes for everyone.

City Business Library

Happy belated new year!  One of my resolutions was to post to this blog more regularly, I may be off to a slow start but hopefully you should start to see more items posted over the next few months.

One useful resource I found out about at the end of last year was the City Business Library in London.  As a public library is free to use, has loads of useful current business information (with some overlap with us) but also offers a calendar of great workshops, usually only for £5 each.    For example those with resolutions including updating those CVs, starting job hunts or learning how successful companies do it, attending one of these might just make the difference.

The events calendar can be found here: http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/city-business-library-2936108893

Their website is here: City Business Library and I thought their resources would be useful especially to those of you living in London and commuting up to Luton but also it is less than an hour to get there from Luton so might be worth a visit even if you are based locally.

If you do make use of it perhaps you'd like to let me know whether you would recommend the library and its services and whether you learnt anything whilst you were there?

Welcome to our new and returning students, I hope you have a fun and studious year.  Over the course of this academic year I hope to use this blog to offer a few useful facts and bits of information, to help you and point you in the right direction and to give you another method of contacting me and hopefully you will teach me something new as well.

I look forward to working with you all and in case you need them my other contact details can be found here: http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/help/ALLs/claire-carter

This just made me smile.

I was actually browsing the web for freely available images under copyright rules and came across this article.  There is an argument that what the chap did was a bit sneaky however most people like a win for the small man.  Just a bit of light reading to break up all of that AMP and dissertation research/writing.

Profitable Olympics

I came across this little article this morning whilst browsing the BBC website.  Although it obviously has a marketing slant I thought some of you might be interested in the companies mentioned and whether or not they've profited from the amounts invested in advertising at the Olympics.
